The Association was formed on the 3rd September 1980 to promote sports awareness and representation of firefighters at a number of sporting events.

In recognition of the need to have a logo as representation of the Association's identity approval was sought from the NSW Fire Brigades to use the department's official insignia. This was obtained on the 19th February 1981. The department officially promoted the existance of the Association with the publication of In-Order 1981/34, released on the 9th September 1981.

Funding for the Association primarily came from membership contributions. In February 1985 approval was given for Payroll deduction system commenced contributions from members.

In October 1995, the Commissioner Ian Mac Dougall AC became our first Patron. In addition approval was also given for the selling and promoting of sports merchandise by the Association. The role of Patron has been passed down to our current Commissioner. Our Patron supports us in promoting sport, health & fitness amongst our members. In 2005 the department rescinded the approval for full usage of NSW Fire Brigades logo. Currently the Association has limited use and this must be approved by Commissioner.

Membership today is in excess of 1300 members of the NSW Fire Brigades with representations from the permanent, retained and administrative ranks.

On the 23rd April 1998 the Association became Incorporated and is now referred to as the N.S.W. Fire Brigades Sports Association Inc. A new Constitution was also drawn up.

We offer assistance to our members for participation to a number of different sporting events and activities.
